The Rotary Club of Greenock, part of Rotary
District 1230, has been providing
quality service to the local community, nationally
and internationally since our founding in 1954. We
believe the best way to continue providing this
service is through an energetic and representative
membership.
This page presents a brief history of the club as
well as links to lists of the current and founder
members.
History of The Rotary Club of Greenock
The Rotary Club of Greenock, whose Mother Club is
the Rotary Club of Glasgow, was granted its Charter
in the Lorne Restaurant on 9th February 1954 with
James Livingstone as President. Since then the
Greenock Club has mothered 3 other clubs:-
In the case of Gourock the Greenock club willingly
shared its territory, the Greenock club meeting at
lunchtime, Gourock meeting in the evening.
The Inner Wheel of Greenock was Chartered in 1957
and a Probus club in 1971
Our club, which began with 19 members in 1954
currently has 36. One of the early members,
Duncan McSwein served District 102 as Governor in
1968-1969.
The club has produced 5 Foundation Fellows and has
recently been actively involved in Group Study
Exchange. Notable events have been the 21st
birthday celebrations (1975), the 40th anniversary
(1994) and 75th anniversary of Rotary in 1980.
In February this year the club celebrated the 50th
anniversary of the granting of its charter by
holding a special Charter Dinner.
In 1999 the Greenock Club led
District 1230 to its
part in the
"Tall Ships Race" which led to the
collection of £6,000 for Rotary Charities. For
this, and its help in publicising Rotary, Greenock
was awarded the prestigious Ed Cadman trophy in
October 1999.
For the 2004/2005 Rotary year the club has its very first
lady president, Isabel Lind. At the Annual
Charter Dinner, four Paul Harris Fellowships were
awarded as part of our Rotary Centennial
celebrations.
